How to record (Part 1&2)

Well I seem to get asked on msn every once and a while 'how do i record my tracks?"....so i thought of instead of having to help every person how to do it, i make one post for all of you, and who ever asks me on msn....

step one
Get the software and hardware

Now if your not going to be to serious about this, it may cost little or no money. all you need is a comp, with a mic plug (almost all comps have this) a mic, now more expensive is better but even a comp mic will work (what i use, stole it from my radio broadcasting class at school) Or if you are dirt cheap poor, and have a pair of headphones, plug that into the mic plug, and it works.....

now you should have speakers to moniter everything, so thats all you really need hardware wise, for the most basic recording...

Software: Well you can go alot of ways with this, but the way i use is Cool Edit Pro 2.0, wich is one of the best MP3/wave/sound editor out there....Retail price is like $399...well since were all bums prolly, were gonna steal it...no, i dont mean go to your local K-mart and run out with a copy, cause you probaly wont get far...

Download Kazaa (you may already have it) but look under software for cool edit pro 2.0 and download the one that says "Cool Edit Pro + REG - Parodox"...i dont know if the other results will work...

Aight after you download you can find a serial number for it http://www.astalavista.com/ go there and go under the search thing, try different seach sites, and youll find it...


For now, This is all im going to do, ask questions about how to get this far, and in a few days ill post part 2, wich will be the recording process...

Well aight since dnn actually said anything, shows that someone cares so ill keep going.

First off, beats...:

Now there is tons of places to get beats from, kazaa, soundclick.com, mp3.com...
you can download other artists (eminem, dre, mobb deep, nas...whatever you want) from kazaa if you look up "song name intstrumental"...almost every big song out has an instrumental that gets released to, so it will probaly be there

Well if you dont want a such public known beat (it sounds stupid, makes me think of the actual song and just dosent feel very original)...you can look at beats from mp3.com and soundclick.com just go to the charts under hip hop beats, and there is tons...so many that its hard to find one that is right what your looking for....now many of these producers dont want you to use there productions on actual albums, but will allow for demo/website use...

now that you have a beat were onto cool edit 2.0 recording (assuming you have rhymes, cause sorry there is no good tutorial for that ;) )


Multitrack recording in Cool Edit

Open up cool edit 2.0 click the button in the top left corner that is right under the words 'file' and 'edit'...now your in multi track...

put in your beat by right clicking in the grey part by track one and then clicking insert Wave from file..find the beat, and put it in...

now to record (assuming you already have a mic in) simply on track 2 press the little red button that is a capital R...this sets that when you hit record it will record on that track...just tinker around with this youll get the hang of that part...when you want it to stop recording on that track, click it again

but to actually record, click the red button on the bottom left corner, and it starts recording and playing the beat at the same time......record...

well all the rest (effects, editing) is really learned on your own, ill post some tips on part 3 but this is basic stuff right now...

Mixing down: All in one track

Now go into a track right click, and hit "mix down to track, and select all"...
now it mixes down all of the tracks you recorded, plus the beat onto one, all mixed together...double click it, and hit save from the file menu at the top...make sure you save it as an mp3 format....

there you go, you have an mp3...may not be top quality, but you cant really put out great stuff right away, but atleast you have something...

Yeah I wanted a copy of fruityloops of cakewalk but can't seem to find anyone who has it so i can make a copy but ejay is pretty fucked sometimes cos samples don't playback right n its really awkward. But keep postin all that up in here cos i'll find it useful.

i have fruity loops and cakewalk (illegal copies)...i havent really learned or tryed to learn cakewalk yet...looks complicated...i downloaded em both of kazaa

and ejay is aight but not many samples used, cant cant really change the samples to much....feels to constrictive...

well, a mic, is only a speaker going in the other direction...and a speaker is just a mic going out....you can record with most headphones...just plug it in the mic line, and make sure to go to audio properties (the speaker in the right bottom corner)...then go to options, click recording options...then make sure that microphone is not muted

hey milli i just got fruityloops and made a simple loop then change it around and warped it a bit in cool edit 2000 hit me up on msn or e-mail and i'll give ya a listen for some constructive criticism. Me and one a my friends chucked it together pretty quickly..

elim i got fruityloops but when i try and open saved files it says file cant be found so fuck off or sumthin along those lines anyways.. you know wats up??

you dont have to worry about the cool edit question anymo i got all three 2000 is easier to use but the pro versions have a heap of complicated shit..

yea i use cool edit 2.0 pro....if you have 2000 you need the mp3 plug in to save files as mp3...

fruity loops save prob...dunno theres a few fruity loops files going around on the net that are not completly full maybe you got one of those....dunno, i dont use fruity loops that much

What track two? Where is that? I uploaded a .wav instrumental and I see the red O button at the bottom left but doesn't record. Whats the big "R"?

theres different tracks right in front of you . . . the beat should be in track 1 and you should record yourself in track 2 . . on the left of the tracks are little buttons, click the red R (square shaped) and then press the record button to start it (near bottom with play, stop, etc.) . . .

why would i spend around 30 dollars an hour just to record a song that no-one will care about really anyways...im not gonna pay like 60 bucks for a song for a battle, or make a funny song or anything stupid like that... ok 'baby'....

i make 7.25 an hour, i pay for pretty much everything except house/food in house/medical bills....plus i go to school...i only make about 450 a month, im supposed to waste a good portion of that on tracks that no-one will really care about/buy....so i work 4 hours at my shitty job cooking for people who dont care about me, so i can make songs that they wont care about...so a good mic and a good audio card would run around 200...then i can record at my house, better then studio time...

i make em on my comp cause its free, i can do it when i want, and i can edit exactly like how i want...not only that but im thinking of getting into audio engineering when i get older, and what do i have to do when i record at home...make my own damn audio, engineered by myself...

now im not saying its worth it to get studio time, but cmon, were net-cees not making a dime off these songs, and i know im not gonna make it as an mc, i do this for fun...its not like im the only one doing this 'computer' thing i learned from many other people who make some damn good quality sounding audios...

oh and guess what almost 99 percent of modern studio use to edit...dun dun dunnnn...COMPUTERS... they usually use a program called 'pro tools' wich is bassically just like the program i use cool edit....so its like this, i almost have my own personal studio, that cost me, nothing...

Kazaa is shit!!!
use WinMX its ten times better, and does not install spyware on ure computer, and that means,less of those same lukin net pop-ups.
Win MX is more realiable and rareley needs to be updated. I think i had kazaa for bout a year, the program fuked my brand new shit up, i had to wipe the shit twice in 2 months within having kazaa.

the bullshit virus programs that come with kazaa, dont do jack, all that does is let the company who runs the so called anti virus package, that u accept to there terms which means they can send u shit loads of spam and net ads, these pop up al the time. Stay away from kazaa, yeah it were good at 1st, buit when i heard of WinMX, tried it, i found it tens times better.

yea i use kazaa lite...no spyware, and some pretty cool features...

but about cakewalk, i have never really tried to use it...i dled but once i got it finally working i didnt know what to do with it...but if i were you ide just try all versions you possibly can

man i'm glad i read ur post elim. i've been tryin 2 figure out cool edit 4 a while and i got some stuff down but i still got lots 2 learn. i've tried frooty loops and ejay. anyway i'm looking forward 2 ur next post on effects cuz thats exactly what i need.. i need 2 figure out how 2 add a sort of echo or something at the end of each verse that i got 2 make it sound good.. also 4 a chorus i've been playing around with lots of stuff but didn't come up with anything that i really liked.. u got any ideas there? n e way keep postin i'm readin

aight...ill just make a quick post for ya...echo is pretty simple...while in the single wave mode...click effects..delay effects...click echo...

try the presets before trying to make your own...some presets will work perfectly for you...also try delay and stuff to...


other than that, just mess around eventually you will learn lil tricks to make it sound better...i was never really showed how to use it, but after a while ive gotten aight at it...
