ehh im getting a shure sm 58, runs about 100, its a great mic, used mostly for concerts and shit

if u got that u would need a pre amp wich u basically need with all mics, to get the best possible quality

either taht or a pretty good mixer

and as far as programs, it all depends on taste, personally i use adobe audition wich is the upgrade of cool edit pro, others use acid pro and loads of other programs

i find adobe best user friendly, got ne questions feel free to hit me upp on aim or sum shit

yo... WTF is a pre-amp??????????? wut exactly does it do?

get a decent mic, up ya producin skills on wuteva program u're usin, and shit'll be goood.. lol.. I mean, if u get a 10$ mic, and know Everything in Cool Edit, EVERYTHING... every single effect and option and trick... u kno' shit like that... if u know the whole program by heart, u'll be able to make ur shit sound almost like studio quality..

a pre amp is needed to power a mic (if needed) because your PC only pushes out so many volts. usually with dynamic mics they arent needed, but with condenser mics you need it- gives your voice some oomph.

heres what I got and it works dandy. I got a 60 dollar mic 990 MXL Cardioid Condenser Microphone with a 100 dollar PreSonus TubePRE pre amplifier to power it. I record in a cubby type deal in my room, so if you have somethin like that or a closet- those work too, u should pad it up with somethin. I went to a local store and bought some mattress foam to semi sound proof my area for recording (30 bucks). I use a few programs, I used to record on MultitrackStudio and mix with GoldWave, but I'm tryin to get used to Adobe Audition which does all that good stuff. I downloaded those so they're free and all that. All together I paid about 200 dollars for my shit (not including fruityloops) and it sounds pretty good I think.

A preamp is nothing more but a control standard for your vocals...... u can cheat the system a lil bit and save money and still have bangin quality if u buy a good DJ Mixer.......I dont use a Preamp I use a Interface which allows me to hook up my XLR cables from my mic into the back of my computer......but before I run it into my computer I run it into my Numark Matrix 2 Mixer and from there I can elimnate that ignoying bass from your voice or add bass or treble...or whateva.....then from there into the computer......

-so get a good Condenser Mic from about 80-100 dollars

-find a dj mixer (pawn shop or something) for bout 50 to 80 dollars

-and a Interface which is about 100 dollars.....

^^^and that is your main equipment......

now u are going to need some other small but effective things .....

like a Popper Stopper and some good computer monitors for editing.

headphones ofcourse is a must ....... and Adobe Audition is prolly the best program under Pro Tools......

......But once u get all that ....u are going to need a good editing process which is what really gives u the studio feel not the equipment.....dont get it twisted..u still need the equipment but after u get the equipment u are going to need a good editing process for you program. I use Adobe Audition which is the same as Cool Edit Pro.

I have a very new computer so the soundcard in it is beyond great.....so if u have a 2004 made computer your soundcard should be great...but if you have a stone age cpu u might wanna ivest in a good sound card.

Total cost if u get the required things not including the computer:
Popper Stopper <<<<<SHURE Popper Stopper
Mic Cable <<<<XLR Cables for Mic
Condenser Mic <<<MCA-SP2
Mixer <<<<Numark Matrix 2
Interface <<<<GCi 404 Audio Interface
Head Phones <<<Sony
monitors <<<< Altec Lansing(good ones.....100 includes Subwoofer)

Cost: $500-600 <<<I already had a Mixer and headphones so it was only about 300 for me.

So that is basically wat i went about going to get for my studio and ofcourse I have add ons but fuck what everyone says....ask me and Sleepy this is basically what u need for your foot in the door for good quality.
