Tips from all over the net. Peep for private lessons on the pm.

----Masta_T's Battle Tips----

1. Do not be afraid to take some time when writing rhymes; especially when your starting out

2. when your off the site, just grab a pen and pad and just start writing lyrics sometimes you'll pull battle ideas out of the air

3. Freestyling helps too, when your off the site just try doing freestyle raps, it doesn't even have to make sense just as long as your using real words then eventually yo raps will start coming together

4. When battling try and find out as much as you possibly can about your opponent, whether it be losses, wins, previous posts, occupation, email name, anything can be used as a weapon

5. DO NOT by any means try and do writing styles like what the vets do when your starting out 'cause if you do and yo rhymes don't make sense, a structure verse will be used against you and a poser verse will be used against you and it WILL most of the time cost you the battle

6.DON'T EVER BITE YO LYRICS FROM ANYWHERE i.e. 8 mile

7. Structure is very important in a battle, make yo bars flow as perfectly as possible 'cause flow is a major category when battling

8. Complexity in yo rhymes is good as well, your not here to make a cat in the hat book

9. If you talk sh1t, you best be able to back it up

10. Have fun battling, this site wasn't made for everyone to beef every 2.5 seconds

Well i hope this helps and good luck with your battles

Loki's Tips

thaught masta missed a few points...

*1 - listen to great rappers, and infamous battle songs...like hit em up or jayz and nas's verses. Learn from the greats.
*2 - Be humble. Alot of people write like this.

Your....so and so
But IM ...blah blah..

In my opinon, Its more important to concentrate on his bad points rather than giving urself a hand job every second bar.

*3 - On the other hand tho, if you get the chance to go second u have a great oppurtunity to win personnels. If he says somethin on u then u can back it up wit a " naw im a ...so and so... understand??

*4 - Winning is the objective, as ive said before, dont slap him in the face, stab ur oppenonet in the dark... u can say sorry afterwards if ur verse was hard felt...

*5 - The end outweighs the means. Backing up point 4, if u are friends with someone dont worry, if there cool then theyl know it is just a part of the fun.

*6 - Dont run urself out of gas.. Obviously the more battles u have the more u have to reach into ur creativty bank, but be aware that writers block can strike at any time...lol

*7 - I totally agree with masta... Find out as much as u can about ur opppenent.. Old names, where he lives, What he does for a living, nething nething at all is ammo, and dont waste it...

*8 - In the same league as point 7, a good idea to piss of ur aponent is to mimic his style or to speak on it.... ie if he always uses multis, adapt ur style around his, and mention that u cant stamp on his style but he cant touch urs ( but again be careful with the handjobs, u mite get injured

*9 - Dont bite off more than u can chew...50cent has recently done this with dissing multiple people. stay nuetral on the site, dont boast and dont be shy... im not saying that get friends so they will biast votes, when too much emoction is involved, love or hate, u can never get an honest opinon...

*10 - If u lose, so what theres always next time.. i know how much battling and rap means to me but dont let it get to u if u have lost a battle, learn from it and dont make the same mistakes twice...And have fun!!!

Ya feel me??

Metaphors, flow and rhyme scheme explained. for those who would like to elevate
Short explanations for some different ways to do metas.

metaphor
you say one thing is another. like if you said 'my style is gravity', that's a metaphor. your style = gravity.

allegory
metaphor with a full explanation. like if you continued your meta and said, 'my style is gravity, everybody fall because of it' this is an allegory.

symbol
symbol is a part of something that stands for the whole thing. like instead of saying like you smoke cess, you say you smoke puff. cos when you smoke cess, you breathe out the smoke, you puff. so puff = cess. or if you said 'my @@@@@s is the peel and you: straight slippin' that could mean peel = bananas = crazy and slippin = meet your downfall if you step to them.

metonymy
when you compare something by what it what happens when you do it. like when some people call freestyling spittin, that's a metonymy. talking = spittin (while you talk)

metalepsis
like a metonymy but even more intense. like if you said 'my spits drown your earsnares' then spits = words, drown = fill cos you're talking loud, and earsnares = eardrums cos snares are drums.

implication
you sort of say something without saying it directly, you imply it. like if you was to say 'me and my @@@@@s break bread together' you don't really mean real bread, you mean you divide up your money. but the way you say it, people know what you mean. so bread = money here.

personification
you make inanimate objects act like people. like when bounty killa says his gun bark and bite, he means his gun makes nuff noise when he bus off shots and the bite is when bullets lick people. bark = gunshot noise and bite = bullet wounds here.

antipersonification
is the opposite to personification. you make people act like inanimate objects. like if you said 'ya moms is a doorknob, she gives every @@@@@ a turn.' then mom = doorknob.

simile
when you say something is 'like' something or 'as' ... as something. if you said 'got honeys like sand on the beach' that's a simile, (lots of) girls = (lots of) sand on the beach

parable
when you compare the two different things in your simile. like if you said 'got honeys like sand on the beach, love to get tossed up, always in reach, grab a handful of fine brownskin tans, and when they get all wet they just stick to me, man.' that compares sand and your girls, cos it describes both.

quotation
is where you repeat something else someone said before you. like if you said 'common is right. i see the b1tch in yoo too' that's a quotation.

colloquialisms
colloquialisms are slang words or phrases like 'get busy' or 'drop it like it's hot' or 'beat that face' that people use. you build on these when you're using metas and punchlines so it's good to know lots of them.

metallage
when you treat a colloquialism like a person. like if you said, 'i ain't tryin to hear yes yes y'all, i done robbed yes yes y'all and beat it down in the hall' that means yes y'all = played out

proverb
an old saying that you repeat. like when meth said 'i'm a simple man, still i'm never satisfied like the stones' that's called a dueling proverb cos you take two proverbs that are opposite to each other and put them against each other.

apologue
apologue is a fable, you talk about animals or inanimate objects like they're people. any of aesop's fables are good. so is ll cool j's 'milky cereal' from mama said knock you out.

hendiadys/2 for 1
use 2 nouns to describe a thing instead of just one. like if you said '@@@@@s bite my style like kibbles and bits, head out to cyphers and hold their quibbles and tiffs' that's a hendiadys. style biting = kibbles/bits (different types of dog food). and later, cyphering = quibbles/tiffs (different type of arguments)

hendiatris/3 for 1
is like hendiadys but using 3 nouns instead of 2. when eminem says 'i'm a cross between manson, esham, and ozzy' that's a hendiatris.

FLOW

First off I'm not the best around here by far, but here are a few things I did to help myself improve on flow.

BAR LENGTH

in most cases (not all), when your flowing you want to have all your bars similar in length. this way your rhyming words will be pretty much always landing in the same spot. but where you put your rhyming words is another topic I will touch apon later.

SYLLABLE COUNT

this is partially hand in hand with bar length. IF you count your syllables in each bar you want to have them around the same as well.. I usually stay around 12-15 syllables per line/bar.
Practice and you'll find a syllable count which your comfortable with.

BREATH CONTROL

this is a really important factor when doing audio. text not so much. but important none the less.. the previous sections are contributing to breath control as well.. you want to have a steady supply of air in your lungs almost at all times.. theres nothing worse than hearing someone gasp for breath in thier audio. you dont wanna be paced on one bar, then hafta rush the next to spit it out on time for the beat. (I've been guilty of this, I admit it)

RHYME SCHEMES

a rhyme scheme is basically like a blueprint for your writtens or freestyles for that matter. Its all about where your rhyming words are that make this important. Cuz where you rhyme in your lines drastically dictates how your flow will sound.

the "x" represents filler words that pertain to the line but doesnot rhyme

the CAPPED letters such as "A" "B" "C" "D "E" represent your rhyming words.

examples.)
Ex. 1)
xxxxxx xxxxxA
xxxxxx xxxxxA

Ex. 1a)
"one day I plan to see amongst all of this, smoke and the ashes
to be a part of this hip hop when you, hopelessly gassed kid"

this is a fairly simple rhyme scheme, the end of each bar is what rhymes. basic, but a good start.

Ex. 2)
xxxxxA xxxxxB
xxxxxA xxxxxB

Ex. 2a)
"I try to see the light but Its seems to me it's dimmin
and every time i try to do whats right I end up sinnin"

notice the words "light" and "right" approx. in the middle of each bar. that adds an internal rhyme scheme to this.. this is a little more advanced but not hard to get the hang of once you get crackin at it. as well as you have the original end words rhyming..

Ex. 3)

xxAxxx xxxxxA
xxAxxx xxxxxA

Ex. 3a)
"I'm tired of wakin-up, havin ta take-the-bus
sick a not makin-bucks, an bein... flat on my face-wit-luck"

this takes a little more practice and as you get better with multisyllable rhyming you will find this scheme alot easier.

Ex. 4)

A B C D E
A B C D E

Ex. 4a)

" I spray fools like grafitti with my nouns and verbs
and stay cool like tahitti smokin pounds of herb"

that one there takes a long time to master and follow through on a whole verse like that, and you rarely see it done for anylonger than a few lines.. but it is quite a nice addition to a verse mos def.

hope this helps

Young Stylez

Writing Lyrics ( Road to rapping. )

OK, if you think you have the talent to become a good emcee ( Not just text emcee ) then these tutorials will help you elevate your skills. This particular tutorial will come in sections.

1.) Writing lyrics.
2.) Bar formats.
3.) Construction/Delivery.
4.) Subject matter.

1. Writing Lyrics:

If you're any kind of emcee then you're good at writing lyrics. But, you should know how to write lyrics. There's ways to write lyrics so that you can leave them and when you come back, still understand the flow of them just incase they had to be rapped a certain way. For example:

Instead of writing:

Walked down the street, to the beat, holding heat.

You would write:

Walked down the street. / To the beat. / holding heat.

You may ask, "Why can't you just use commas?" Well, to the people that use punctuation when they write, it'd confuse them. This is how I seperate my bars when writing lyrics. It helps me out. It helps me know what I need to say before the end of the bar. I know to rap until I get to the next "/".

Bar formats:

This varies with each person, and each flow. For the faster rappers:

Faster rappers spit more words in one bar, than the average speed, and slower rapper does in one bar. When you're a fast rapper you have to make sure that you can spit out lots of words, but control your length so that it all makes sense and words don't slur together. If there's too many words to get the sentence out without two words sounding like one, then speed rapping isn't the thing for you.

Also, you need to know how you talk, and how much spit your mouth produces. You don't want long bars if your mouth produces lots of saliva, because then it's almost like you're drooling while waiting for the bar to be over, for a chance to swallow. And if you have lots of words in the next bar, you might not have a chance to swallow ..and you might actually drool. You don't want that. You want everything to seem smooth, and come together perfectly as if you're doing it without effort at all.

For the average/slower rappers:

It's easier for you, because there's not much to worry about. You have to ride the beat more carefully, though. You have to know when to add in a rhyme word, and where a word would fit better at. Like Eminem. Perfect example. He rides every beat he's on to perfection. For any audio examples, listen to "Patiently Waiting" by 50 Cent, featuring Eminem or "Lose Yourself" by Eminem. On both songs, he rides the beat well. He puts emphasis on certain beats. Like when the snare hits, he'd say his rhyming word, and the next time the snare hit, he'd say the word that rhymed with it. It sounds alot better when you ride the beat well, instead of just flowing to the beat.

Also, you shouldn't have to take pauses that don't seem necessary. Fabolous take pauses normally, but his come in transition. If yours come in the middle of the bar, you might need to add words. BUT, be careful when doing this because you could over-crowd the bar, and it won't sound as well. Make sure that it sounds nicely when you rap it to the beat, and doesn't sound as if you're trying to rush something out.

Construction/Delivery:

This is a very important part of rap. Some of the best rappers have very disctinctive deliveries that make them who they are. The Notorious B.I.G. has a delivery that sounds nothing like the way that Tupac works. One of the most noticable deliveries is Freeway's. Oh my god, his is so good that no one else can pull it off like him. He switches his rhyme scheme so that he rhymes every other bar, but it's nice with him.

You need to have your own delivery. Try to be original. The best way to do it, is to rhyme in a way that no one else is doing right now. Just think of something crazy, and then work on it until the point that it fits you well, and you're good at doing it. Some deliveries don't work well in text battles. Most of this tutorial goes for actual emcees. I may not have covered everything in this section. P.M. me if there's need for me to go over something else.

Subject matter:

Man, if you rap about something..make sure it's something worth rapping about. 50 Cent has an ok rhyme, but he raps about the same thing and you don't want that to happen to you. Rap about the life you live. And make sure you do it well. Use detail. Paint pictures. Don't always focus on vocabulary. Focus more on using the simple words to paint the complex pictures. That's when your flow is at it's best. Have a point when you rap. Don't do it just to do it. Make sure that you're rapping about something that a person can sit back, and think about. Of course, you'll feel like putting out that one or two party songs, but that can't be your whole album, or you won't be reguarded as an artist with substance. You'll be Li'l Jon and the Eastside boys.
