I just had someone call me and I told them the same thing I've said a million times....so I thought I'd post it.
You want to get signed, here's what you do. Very few people do it because it's a little like work. It's simple and here it is:
1) Back your own recording. Do it with a producer/engineer who knows what they're doing. Make sure your samples are royalty cleared and open for copyright.
2) Have your album professionally mastered.
3) Duplicate your CD's PROFESSIONALLY. No laser print crud. Do a run of at least 1,000 like what you see in stores.
4) Perform EVERY CHANCE YOU GET. Doesn't matter if it pays or not. Swing CD's out left and right. Sell what you can. Keep the money from sales and do another run. No, you have not made money yet.
5) Keep performing, perfecting your act and live performance. Listen to all feedback.
6) Repeat
This is what NOT to do:
1) Hang out at parties to make connections
2) Shotgun your CD to every label and producer known to man
3) Listen to hype and circle jerk with fellow artists, you should be working on your craft
4) Be wary of people taking money to promote you.
5) Do not believe industry hype
6) If you're not working on your art, then you're not doing it
Tips for the craft:
1) Be honest - say what you have to say
2) Do not try to be something your not, if you're not a gang banger, then don't try to be one
You guys can say all you want that this is wrong. But I guarantee if you say that then you're not doing it.
:)
