todays music i think is improving to a point. . . the internet fules and helps alot- with pure mainstream -radio- and tv i think it would jsut die but more and more nowadays people are becoming more and more interested in underground rap. . . groups that may never go mainstream are gettin heard quite a bit- like aesop rock- chino xl - even canibus is sellin pretty well considering the facts that the only bis video u r likely 2 c is 2nd round ko on a classic jam of the day. . .

also i think hip hop is expanding w/ diff genres - rock and rap have been coming together quite a bit lately. . . u can now see pure rapppers likeing such groups as linkin park- korn- metallica- limp biscuit and other rock groups as well as pure rock people enjoying the sounds of such groups as outkast or eminem. . . music is going great now and is at its peak in my view never has music influenced so much in society

I feel the course of hip-hop is at a major turning point (for the better) that is. For numerous years, the major music industry players have used the hip-hop culture to exploit rap music in a negative form. You know, promoting murder and drug dealing for example. Yah, those may be ills in society, but the way the major music players have used these negative aspects of the inner-city in which many of us live to glorify self-destructive ways is unacceptable in my opinion.

Like Distinct said… Music is very influential. And with the surge of underground artists having the ability to be heard on an international scale via the Internet and other mediums, the playing field has been leveled for true talent to emerge.

Peace,

I think that mainstream is striaght garbage..........they all sound the same and they all say the same shit.......it's either 'shake your ass'.....'I got more doe than you do and more cars too........o yeah and I got more hoes'.........or it's 'Imma kill you bitch'........not creative at all........and I know that mainstream is more about 'club bangers' and what not........but seriously when someone is in the club dancing around they're not listening to the words.......all they hear is the beat.......so if you make 'club bangers' than why evan have vocals on it no one really gives a fuck what you're saying

I don't really care for Rap right now, I'm just stuck in my lil bubble.. I only listen to the illest times of hip hop from 1987-1997 that decade.. was bomb.. we had our NAS, RAKIM, BIGGIE, GANGSTARR... it's just gold..
as for underground.. it's defenitly different due to the lack of exposure so this ducks can't be rappin' bout cars n shit if they dont have it.. and thus the topic of most tracks are around what truly matters.. human interaction, thoughts and ideas and progressive improvement, and above all life. Word to tha muda fucka.

rap is full of misogyny, fake ppl, n aint too many groundbreaking or breath of fresh air emcees out there. although i think the westcoast is building itself to a rebirth with alot of dope ass emcees. I am feeling the vibe, as far as beats are concerned alot of dope beats are being put out. but as far as lyrics, its only underground (and a few mainstream rappers) where you can quench your thirst.

i see the hip hop game as a battle in keeping it real, Imean, you've got the mainstream. more then half of the mainstream sucks. The problem is that you can't deny the fact that most of the shit that comes out is made by dope artists, stuff like busta rhymes, i mean that guy got skills, he's real talented and denying that would just be hating the game, 50cent is dope and all that, jay-z is dope, we just can't close our eyes on that! most of them have all have mad talent. But it just makes me sad when i them turned around to do the same shit, talking bout the same shit, dressing with the same shit... and they all tend to that after a couple of years of beeing in the game! now this shit has got me confused, are they really actually garbage??? stuff like the neptunes, the neptune are d.o.p.e, and don't even think about saying that they're not, they're varyation of styles and influence is just enormous but i mean when it comes to producing britney spears and talking again about the shit we've heard 50 times with snoop (beautifull), I'm like , come on!!! i know "music is music" but what the fuck???? kepp this shit real! it never was like that before! Now everything kind of sounds the same and they've stoped the creativyty and are more occupied about what they look like in there knew tv clip.
All that shit is triggered by the envy of material shit, money...
It never used to be like that before, before it was all about representing the real life, sturring shit up to make the politicians react and to make a difference, originality, taking shit to another step... now it's all fucked up

i think hip hop is sick these days... despite the mainstream where it's all bout chorus and krunk ish... but the stuff underground cats be coming up with is hella ill.. plus there's so much competition u really gotta elevated just to stay at the top.. so many diff styles u got be innovative.. so ye i'm lovin hip hop cuz u got push the limits to be bomb...

I cant believe what the author of this post said...Llloyd banks?....cmon now if you took there lyrics and put them over say an underground beat youd realize how bad the lyrics really are see your mind is tellin you hes tight but its the beat the beats are for clubs and it drowns out the lyrics but if you really pay attention to lyircs of these mainstream cats youd see they got nothin on the flow of underground heads...example is Hieroglyphics...there one of the greatest underground groups of all time..htere flow is amazing and there beats are origina...so in my opinion hip hop nowdays is ok if you look at the underground scene but mainstream is fuckin garbage these unnderground cats need more recognition they are way better than mainstream cats and IM talkin Jay Z whatever you throw at me i can find an underground MC who will fawk up these mainstream wack rappers like nelly and Lil Flip....Im out \\//

No hell no i think there are some tight ass rapers out right now and lloyd banks is one of them! Hell the whole G-Unit is tight except for Young Buck, to tell ya the truth i can't stand that fu. There are alot of the same things over and over, but hey i just have one thing to say. Those guys that keep rappin' about the same shit over and over again, well...they are richer then probly at least 90% of everyone here and they always will be cause they aint gonna get poor anytime soon.

I haven't been familiar with things coming out on the mainstream for a minute. I even copped the underground copy of Kanyes "College Dropout", "Im Good" album. There are some hot tracks on there guys, it needs to be peeped.
As far as what I listen to, and what inspires me, is music that will never be heard on the radio.
But you can't say cats underground aren't making money. Aesop rock has a few albums that went gold, without one track on the radio. As well as Buck 65 (He might get canadian airplay... I wouldn't know, I don't live there).

BUT WAIT... don't be so quick to trash the mainstream. I can never picture myself breaking it down with a chick on a dance floor to some sage francis, Etc. Mainstream is basically, lets get wasted party music, and if DJ's didn't spin it, I wouldn't get down on the floor.

most people in mainstream rap are gs or fake gs. hip hop is in a dark time. everyone tries to be hard. Im want to hear lyrical wit not murder an shit.Mos Defs first album was hot so was the roots, kweli's, nas, hovs, and bigs. We need to study the classics and make new ones before rap loses its credibility once an for all.

I've not read any of the other posts in this thread, so, excuse me if i repeat anyhting anyone else has said.

Musicly, the state of Hip Hop is good. Morally, it's in a bad state. Artists such as 50 Cent, Nelly etc. are selling records for glamorising violence, pushing drug and disrespecting women. Although i also believe that the people that are listening to such music haven't the balls or intellect to imitate such artists. Gone are the days of good Hip Hop selling. Immortal Technique, Aesop Rock, AKIR, Tonedeff, Common etc. All these artists who rhyme about the state of countries, the state of politics and real issues are being out-sold buy bullshit rap music.

todays hip hop has completely gone down the drain. let me refrase most of todays hiphop has gone completley down the drain. the entire industry is run by fat white guys who put this bullshit genre out for the youth to feed on and take seriously. the only good thing 50 ever said was that 98% of rappers are fake and you know what the other two % are.
DEAD!
50 just got lucky next time they'll probably get him. but nevertheless
like i was saying the industry is a bunch of fat fucking rednecks that put black faces on album covers with cd's that are filled with filth that some once again some white guy thought up with and little do we all know we are just yet again neing manipulated by big buisiness. but in many cases the artist don't get into it for the money. but in the end thats what it becomes about. these days rap has become formulaic to dumb down the youth so that they become easy to control. in reality the gang life is nothing to glorify. and yes if your talking about gangs mentioning selling drugs and killing people like it's a piece of cake then yes you are glorifying violence etc., which is not as much as i can say for myself but i know the reprocutions and in songs i speak on these consequenses o fmy actions. how often do you see that on the radio......never because all i can here is
money money money
bitches bitches bitches
smoking blunts selling crack getting drunk
and oh my fucking christ if i hear on more of those wretched mainstream r&b songs i'm going to shit on myself eat it shit it out again and throw it at the whiney bitch singing that godforsaken shit. but i'm rambling let's move on shall we. if the hiphop industry had the kind of people working in the buisiness now that they had in the 70's it still would not change a god damn thing and it is pitifull. i guess my view all in all is that most of the rap today really sucks giant enema bag fillings.

Mainstream emcees have the ability to hide behind excellent production, and often, the production and beats are really what peepz are buyin'...People that listen to a lot of mainstream shit either don't know shit about hip-hop, or the people who are hip-hop headz just buy to show love for their fav rappers that actually DO have shit to say, and possess skill and talent.

Underground catz and up-comers have to rely on actual skillz, and people that love hip-hop for what it is listen to those catz, because they recognize tha skillz and the quality of what they sayin'. If you put underground catz and mainstream catz in a huge battle, you might have a couple mainstream catz in the semi-finals, but the underground catz would rip them apart in the end.

Hip Hop is a multi-faceted culture, extending beyond boundaries, but sadly, it's becoming warped by commercialism.
