I have a computer upstairs in my room, my mum has hers downstairs...we both want the internet but at the moment only one can use it at a time cos i dont know how to connect them together usin the ethernet cable. My mum has windows vista and i have windows XP...i want to be able to go on the internet at the same time but i have sum trouble:
1. My computer wont renew my ip address
2. It ses i have no or limited connectivity
3. My mums computer classes my as an unidentified network
There are the errors that come up when i try to conenct the two computers...and i dont know what else to do...its also startin' to annoy me!
Any help is much appreciated!
next time be more precise when describing a problem.
first off, Do you have a wire less network or do you connect the computers to a router by using cables?
I don't really understand, you said you don't know how to connect them using a cable, then you say that your mom's pc is able to detect your pc as an undentified network.. implying that the computers are allready connected to some sort of network.. you're confusing me.. lol.

My mums computer detects me....but as an unidentified network suggestin' her computer cant get hold of my ip address...but i cant renew mine either...hope that made more sense  lol

For A Start - You Need A "Cross-Over" Cable Before You try and direct connect... Secondly you have Vista and she has XP - You may need the LLTP Protocol to be installed on the XP Machine - Easiest solution is to get a cheap ass adsl router and be done with the troubles... :P

If You Have The Router - Assuming Its An ADSL Router And Not A Modem+Router
1. Plug The Ethernet Cable From The DSL Modem Into The WAN Port On The Router (If You Have A Modem Router, You Will Need To Configure It And Ignore This Step)
2. Plug An Ethernet Cable Into The 1 Port - Then Into Your Computer
3. Plug Another Ethernet Cable Into The 2 Port And Into Your Moms Pc
DONE
Should Work Fine... If you have troubles , make sure you dont have manually assigned ip's on either computer and make sure the dchp on the router is on

Or Install the "LLTP Protocol" From Microsofts Website

Is The Internet Running 2 Your Mumz Pc Or The Router?
If Its Running To Ya Momz Pc, Share The Internet Connection In Your Network Properties :D
