Okay, people who don't believe in a God (of any type) most likely look to science for an explanation for how the universe came about. The most popular explanation of this is the Superstring Theory.

Now, my physics teacher said something that sparked a lot of thought.

"The superstring theory works out BEAUTIFULLY mathematically, but it can never be done in an experiment"

So, it is perfect in theory, but cannot be proven.

Sound like religion?

So, why believe in something like this when you can believe in a religion?

They are both basically the same!

Religion reaping ten fold the benefits of "science"

Just posing a question.

valid question. cant directly address it

although quantum mechanics itself talks about things like a whole universe inside of a grain of sand as a metaphor of course, and can theorize on the nature of time, I think it is starting to get to the point where it is describing what religion already said since the beginning.

not being very clear, but food for thought.

Einstein, the co-founder of quantum mechanics as we know it, got very angry when someone tried to misquote his theories to say that God doesn't exist. He certainly believed strongly, no matter and probably because of, the more he learned.

"A contemporary has said, not unjustly, that in this materialistic age of ours the serious scientific workers are the only profoundly religious people." -Einstein

Well fuck, I figure at least it has perfection in theory.

Even in theory... a man in the sky watching me 24/7 don't sound that perfect. There's other hitches, that's just one example.

By the time we can prove a god exists, it won't matter. Basing your acceptance of a god on proof is therefore absurd. For all that we should be concerned, it is a matter of faith.

The nature of being is perfect, and it is in the nature of being that God is made present. Our concept of God is not perfect, and humans will never be "perfect", for it is in the struggle towards perfection that we find meaning; What are we beyond our meaning? Without meaning, why don't we just commit suicide?

it is human instinct to adapt to survive.. besides we have to seek out the almighty pussy if we want true enlightenment.. and i gotta question.. why would God kick adam n eve out if he forgave all who sinned? n another thing the bible says there was a dude who lived to be 900 years old.. Methuzala.. BULLFUCKIN SHIT..

Coming to a teleological acceptance for the belief in god (in which the organized complexity of the universe is the ultimate proof) is just as valid as coming to a moral dependency acceptance (god must exist or what the fuck is the point?) which is just as valid. equal also, but a little less intellectual, is a blind faith acceptance (i believe cuz it feels good)

the believers always must defend it, the atheists always must attack it - they are locked into an opposing dualism just like everything else in existence like good and evil, day and night, yin and yang, and the balanced nature of physics.

The existence of an ultimate architect is self evident to some and absurd to others, both beliefs look pretty equal on benefit vs. consequence scale.. there is no real downside to not believing, but that is countered by a potential upside if u do believe.

seeing as how whichever side i decide to choose wont have much more than a marginal short term effect, socially and financially, on me and my family.. ill take the 2 for 1 wal-mart special for the chance at an upside.

picking this belief is like choosing which sneaker brand your gonna rock. in the sense that nobody is going to really care which one you pick ultimately, except yourself. So whatever you believe, the only person who is gonna give a shit is you, ultimately.

lets not also forget a cornerstone of philosophical thought -- your perception CREATES your REALITY. quantum science is just starting to figure this out. (recommended DVD for sort of a simplied over-packaged elaboration: http://www.amazon.com/What-Bleep-QUANTUM-Three-Disc-Special/dp/B000FKO3JO/ref=sr_1_2/002-7112212-0561605?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1190172870&sr=8-2) titled "What the Bleep?"*

Also The Power of Positive Thinking is starting to be proven correct by quantum physics. (DVD recommended viewing, http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Extended-Rhonda-Byrne/dp/B000K8LV1O/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-7112212-0561605?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1190173048&sr=1-1) called "The Secret"*

I think the positive energy that the acceptance of existence implies - versus the atheist's implied negativism, is also a useful mystical impulse for me, when just picking which side to believe. Your future outcome is based on your thought patterns from the past. Find the mindframe that empowers you the most toward who you are inside. your theological belief structure will play an intimate role in that level of personal development.

It appears we are on the same page with quantum physics. I've watched the "What the Bleep" video many times over, and "The Secret" just once. Anyways, I'll get to the point-

"I think, therefore I am." -Descartes

This is one of the most philosophically groundbreaking statements in my opinion. It captures the concept behind quantum physics, and articulates an experience that all humans can relate with. Even in contradiction, the concepts must be groundbreaking.

Both movies are incredibly powerful.. I have also heard of one called "Waking Life" that's supposed to be amazing. The overall message that I think can be drawn so far from this thread is that anything is possible. While perspective may change ideas, anything is still possible. Through development of ideas, we can believe that something is true, but the beauty of it all is that we will never REALLY know what the truth is.

Waking Life is one of my all time favorites. ALL TIME. deepness in the way it briefly incorporates a wide spectrum of philosophy into an artistic rendering.
