Elevate to where? Canibus had a lot of potential. However, he got in the game in a commercial geared market. If he was to sign to Rawkus (who was destroying underground in his time) he would've been somebody. However, you do not stick a strictly lyrical emcee near wyclef. That's like inserting your penis into Lisa Lamponelli without a condom.

Were talking about lyrics here. Not commercial sucess. ^^

yes because signing to Rawkus records would deam commercial success. No, signing to rawkus would deam artist privledge, not consumer priledge. Which in turn means the artist gets to choose what they want to release... Canibus was brought upon by wyclef, who is strictly commercial, which is why he flopped. Exactly why Jin flopped on Ruff Ryders. So yes, we are talking about lyrics here, and not commercial success. Welcome to the Underground Scene forum.

Can-I-Bus is the most advanced lyrically, ever. that can't be argued and the 'choice is not up to you'. from there, its youre own opinion if you rank him on your favorites list or not.

Rakim drops sometime in next 4 months! <-- most canibus fans are rakim fans, and largely vice-versa.

the main point i want to make though is one important one:

Canibus has been releasing music to the public for 10 years now. Still to this day he is being debated as one of the greatest, controversy abounds, however.

The Canibus topic comes up on seemingly every hip hop forum, he is still mentioned in big interviews.. even 50 cent mentioned him in a negative light recently.. the spirit just wont die. he is obviously not one to be dismissed offhandedly.

in a political generalization sort of way i can definetely say this, though: Canibus will never be (unless his future career changes things in a surprising and dramatic way) considered the greatest or illest MC, its his own fault. That fact should be married to the realization, however, that he must be considered in that league~of~the~illest for reasons above.

this is nuts. Canibus was dope. For his time, a very long time ago.

Thats not true. There's plenty of MC's far more lyrically gifted.

Aesop Rock,Qwel,Sage Francis...hell,even Musab is better.

those styles differ as the poetic/lyrical/whateva structure of their songs....

it's weird to compare canibus and aesop rock...

bis was ill, he had potential..but he screwed it up somewhere, therefor not becoming the illest, though some of his old songs are really sick...but he aint the illest....

and his my top10...but that's only a subjective matter....
objectively speaking he aint top10...though his phylosophical approach seems like wtf  :D
