Me and a good friend took a painful trip from Charlotte to Asheville NC (6hrs round trip) to see an Aesop Rock & Rob Sonic show. AND HOLY CRAP IT WAS WORTH IT. The venue The Orange Peel was PACKED, and its a decent sized venue http://www.theorangepeel.net Tickets were only $18, however, the show was worth $118 at least.
Openers:
Blockhead & DJ Signify. Mixing Blockheads production and DJ Signifies carefully placed cuts/scratches, they had the crowd going crazy. Mixing commercial with underground beats for a good portion making a mesh that created a harmonic status quo.
Black Moth Super Rainbow. A Psychedelic Hip Hop makeover was a perfect set to follow a producer and a DJ. Live drums and bass guitar, a keyboard with nutty ass sound banks, and a lady manning (no pun please) a sampler made an awesome foursome which hyped the crowd up for the man of the hour. I would compare them to portishead minus the vocals, and more upbeat.
Aesop Rock & Rob Sonic. Wow can these guys put on a show. They looked fired up to be there, and they were doing great material. ALSO, we are all sleeping on Rob Sonic. I never even knew how dope he was. Always kind of brushed him off. Aesop Rock did a lot of material from none shall pass, he also threw in Lucy, We're Famous, and of course Daylight. This man can keep a crowd entertained. I got home at 4:00 am, woke up at 7:00 am, worked a 10 hr day, and it was all worth it.
(I am also the proud owner of the Coffee 12" Vinyl signed by him. If you're lucky it might make it to ebay).
