For those of us that were lucky enough to be in the tri-state area in the 90's, you might remember a group Company Flow. Consisting of mastermind El-P (also known as El-Producto), Big Juss, and Mr. Len they created a movement for anti-commercialized hip hop. El-P took the group in the direction he wanted to, and they had much success. El-P had production skills that mixed his own hip hop style, with classic aesthetics, and carefully placed samples that had commercial heads and underground heads saying "WOW"! Their lyrics were like none other. They were Rawkus Records headliners for some time. Their album "Funcrusher Plus" sold over 500,000 copies, which would soon become the largest number for an independent label for albums sold, and put Rawkus on the map.

Due to mutual disagreements, Company Flow broke up. El-P went on for some solo projects, and eventually started Def Jux records (now Definitive Jux Records), who has headliners such as Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, Mr. Lif, and Murs, which makes Definitive Jux the TOP underground label running.

El-P's first solo project "Fantastic Damage" hit the market in 2002. Over
100,000 albums sold, he still had a following from Company Flow. The whole album is an action packed rollercoaster ride with appearances by Aesop Rock, Vast Aire (from cannibal ox), and other Def Jukies.

El-P's most recent project "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" is his most recent yet. Released in 2007, he has made some big moves. Appearances on Conan O'Brian, and Jimmy Kimmel. Also Adult Swim put out a Definitive Swim album featuring Jux reps such as Rob Sonic and Cage, and of course Aesop Rock. Also, Adult Swim did an animated music video for his track "Flyentology".

All these moves made, he is definetly a force to be reckoned with in the underground, however, he remains in the cracks. His moves are in a lot of the music we listen to, however he gets minimal recognition for what he does.

I don't believe they do. He should get more recognition. Even cats that enjoy definitive jux artists probably have no idea he started it!!!

I let a kid I use to work with borrow my "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" album and he never gave it back and he doesn't work with me anymore. Thanks for reminding me that I must kill someone.
