Most of you know him from battling, but he's a pretty dope rapper as well, which usually doesn't work for battlers (Jin)

That was a dope track, however he will never lift the hex of why battle rappers cannot rap. It's not that they can't rap, some of them have the best delivery of any emcee you will hear. The problem is they have no substance. They have nothing to rhyme about except how great they are on the mic, with some clever punchlines to fill the in-betweens.

OK, please act like I listened to the one track and made an assumption from there.
I followed other YouTube links to listen to Illmaculate, and by the time I got back to "ShockValue", I was sick of it.
Cats_Pajamas, please list a few of the underground emcee's that have made their careers off battling. Please drown me in your wisdom.
Oh, and if you are going to mention something without a link, don't mention it. I do not have the energy to do the research for you.

Off battling? You said off "how great they are on the mic, with some clever punchlines to fill the in-betweens. "
And uhhh, do I honestly need to? Who the fuck doesn't do that.

^^^ HIGHLY Recomended
Obviously you didn't do enough research before you made your assumption. Illmaculate is very well rounded. Which is why I said he had hope for shaking the montra of battle rappers.

LOL...
When I stated "made their careers off battling", I did not mean "become famous because they were good battle rappers". I meant: known for battling, followed up by flourishing careers.
Adeem won a scribble jam, Eyedea won Blaze Battles, Sage Francis won a scribble jam, Brotha Ali participated in more than a few scribble jams... All of these emcee's were someone before they went on to battle. They hold titles, however, their music came before their battle status... which is why they are all still working.
Jin is a battle rapper, so is Thesaurus, Math, Murda Mook, Iron Solomon, Nems... None of which have a prosperous music career. ILLMACULATE IS NO DIFFERENT! They have all (at least most) released decent music, why has it gotten them nowhere? Because it is all the same!
Don't get me wrong, Illmaculate would be great on the radio. I look forward to the day we can hear music like that on the radio. He is still a battle emcee, you can hear it in his music, and he will flop.

Actually, you're wrong Danny. Sage's first album didn't come out until AFTER he won at scribble jam. Brother Ali's didn't come out (I believe) until after participating in scribble jam(s) aswell.
Immortal Technique's early career was based off battling. He didn't make a single song until YEARS after.

Sage Francis was in the band A.O.I. (Art Official Intelligence) in the late nineties.
Brotha Ali was already signed to Rhymesayers when he started battling... he wasn't signed for no good reason.
I don't know much about immortal technique, except I like his music.
There was a HUGE hole in my argument when I mentioned Adeem. He won Scribble (1998) before he started the group Glue (with DJ DQ and DJ Maker).
Everyone that has been mentioned so far were battling before it became a sport...
-I'm not done here, I am late for work though. I will continue this-

Murda Mook, Math, and Nems will all most likely flop. Iron Solomon is questionable, I honestly haven't researched enough of his music. But Illmac and Thesaurus I think will both have pretty decent UNDERGROUND careers. Don't get me wrong either, they're not gonna be Lil Wayne or Jay-Z. But that we are talking about them after their first mixtape or so, indicates it enough.

of course they'll never be on the level of a jay-z or lil wayne (career not skill)... to attain that level of fame at this point requires a significant amount of selling out. :(

All of those people you named are cookie cutter emcee's that are helping commercialize another aspect of hip hop poorly. The WRC is no independent project, yet the investors won't flip the dollar to at least get some music in the background to test the artists true ability (not even a friggin beatboxer). Thats why the Scribble Jams and the Blaze Battles actually create REAL opportunities. Labels can get an idea of who to waste their time with.
We are discussing mainly Smack or WRC artists. Up and coming? I don't think so.

Smack artists? Not a chance, but ya, scribble jam is probably one of the best ways to promote yourself and abilities
