Im doing research on the whole process of real hip-hop/R&B artists. My question for everyone is;
What is the process you go through to create your music? Do you start with lyrics, then find a beat for it? The opposite? How do you go about finding a beat you like? When you find a beat you like, what do you get (a CD of the beat that you can manipulate in a studio later?) What if you want a beat from another coast? Please help!!

it used to be...write lyrics, then get a beat that suits it...now its beats, then lyrics...but sometimes ill just freewrite on a subject and find a beat later

for many years we wrote our songs on a guitar and voice on a handheld little casette recorder. many hits. http://soundgems.com
when i write with a piano player...same idea.
all the established artists still do this but the very new producers are often not musicians . they are programmers and thus they do the beat first. but we have more of a perfect song that becomes a classic if we write an actual song first on accustic equipment . ive recently been on sessions with e. budu,dru hill,musiq...everyone does it different.

of course we brought that lttle cassette version of the song into the real recording studio later as a guide for the real final recording. that way all the mucianns vibe off of that to lean the song and get it down..or the mp400 programmer also gets the vibe from the primitive cassette.

Lamej, everybody who responded is right things have changed alot in only a few years, but what most people don't know is that there is that the underground network of melodies actually goes out and finds beats for you. I got referred a while back and I only use them now. They have an exclusive national network of artists and producers, you just work on your lyrics and call them telling them what you want the beat to sound like and they go out and get it for you. If you email me, I'll give you a referral. the only way you can get in is through referrals unless they connect your whole city. hit me up at korey1999@yahoo.com, i'll be happy to refer you.

I can't really use it cuz Im not an artist or producer (I'm just a college student on a visa) but I'll see if someone on the artist board wants to use it.
Thanks

this question depends on how the idea comes about.
if i have wrote lyrics that are really deep then i will go and make the beat for them lyrics but if i make a beat that sounds heavy then i will sit and write to them lyrics. so i go from what ever inspires the song in the first place and it changes all the time. music inspired words and word inspired music thats the way i work.
